Today in 1862, Lincoln drafted and issued the Emancipation Proclamation to free all Confederate slaves on Jan. 1 1863. Spurned on by the Union victory at Antietam, Lincoln’s sudden abolitionist leanings were done for political reasons in the face of a bloody Civil War. Giving the Union and the war a new moral pretext, Lincoln reenergized the Union cause and brought the war to a conclusion, two years later. (Taken with Instagram at Lincoln Memorial)
