EPCOT Colors II: World of Motion
Much like Journey into Imagination, EPCOT Center’s transportation pavilion is a disjunction between aesthetics, subject matter, and themed placement in the park.
While the ideas of transportation run concurrent to Future World East’s theme of engineering, mathematics, and technology, the round shape of World of Motion hardly fits the other pavilion’s hard lines, extreme angles, and often bold visual statements.
Instead, the World of Motion makes up for this in color, texture, and aesthetic presence.
Notice the use of primary colors. Bright red and deep blue are concrete and striking in the pavilion’s entry way. Also, the very texture of the building is imposing and impressive: brushed stainless steel encases the building and is anything like the light and airy statements in glass, from Future World West. The only glass that exists on the pavilion is tinted, and isn’t overly reflective.
Though the building is curved, and meant to symbolize a wheel, the monolithic size of the pavilion also encourages its placement in a mechanical, engineered realm. Even the graceful ramp for the pavilion’s Omnimover, though curved, betrays the kinetics of methodical movement, as chains of bright blue cars make their way past into the building. While a obvious tie to the driving idea of the pavilion, this motion is slow, looks automated, and hints at technicality and reliability- the pavilion is well ordered and well planned. This is opposed to Future Word West’s more organic take on kinetics, the Living Seas sign/wavepool.
As always, EPCOT Center delights in the details.
